Wide Open

May 21, 2026 1 Comment

That's the theme here! What does "wide open" mean for you? Possibilities:
•  Wide Open is a legendary bike distributor in Rotorua, New Zealand.
•  Reference to our vast outdoors spaces.
•  Vacation brings it to calendars, anything goes!
•  Wide open lungs, throttle, or sails—flat out, full speed ahead!

Our latest spoke machine production arrived from our partners in Japan. These leapt over every hurdle and we are fortunate to have them in hand. Check the updated listing and videos.

A new tensiometer with 3" (75mm) span for smaller wheels is coming soon. The current tools stay, as a 4" (100mm) span offers more accuracy, but for smaller wheels, we now have a solution.

Artist rendering!
Similarities to Berd's new mini is because we developed this model together. The Berd unit is specifically for their Trudi truing system.

We have a 3D printed tensiometer stand, designed by Zack August of Arris Composites. We're selling one in black for $15 or you can download the .stl file and print it yourself. Thanks, Zack!

Our black version you can own.
We're also adding a case to the spoke machine digital counter. This cleverness is by Andre Netelers who builds in Germany and generously offers the .stl file for self printing.

Here's an improvement to the Nanuk protective case that fits our tensiometers. A hole cut through the foam beneath the tool pocket can be used to lift out the insert and access conversion charts.

The new Digital Spoke Ruler is reaching the workshops who most value precision.
Legendary frame builder and inventor, Jim Merz wrote, "I got the tool, it's great! This is perfect for my total mess of mixed up spokes. If I send anyone spokes they have to be 100% inspected. Looking at a rule gets old!"

We're also celebrating the arrival of more shufflers in myrtle wood burl. Here are a bunch waiting for new homes.

What a story that grain tells!

Navigating these uncertain times for the bike industry, take notice of positive info. Here is evidence that workshops (which includes wheel building) are doing better than bike retail at large.

So now encouraged, aim yourself out the door, fill lungs with fresh air, and head to wide open spaces!

The tensiometer for smaller wheels is something that I have been hoping someone would make at some point. I look forward to purchasing one!
