Wheelbuilding in Prison

October 19, 2015 1 Comment

Building wheels in prison! How about a repurposed prison? Sounds better. Melody Wheels in Western Australia is Adrian Emilsen's gem: a wealth of experience he shares on a regular basis: reflections, advice, examples, all help customers become informed, motivated, and confident about their wheel decisions.

Once reserved for convicts. Now less discretionary! Wikipedia image.

He is currently working in the Old Fremantle Prison, a 115 year old building closed 20 years ago and now used as a low rent small business incubator. His workshop is literally a prison cell. The doors are very secure!

Prison...a secure spot for focused work! Whoda thunk?

I don't share enough of the cool workshop scenes I'm sent. Too many to catch up on but here are a few recent glimpses of life and setups around the world.

Here is a new shop in Lille, France, Cycles Get Lost. Started by a friends who, energized by the rich local cycling culture (the famous Paris-Roubaix race finishes one town away) and sorrowed by the lack of bike job opportunities, assembled a pretty nice looking enterprise.

Worker owned coop - Rémi, Matthias, Lée, and Julien!

Kamil Strynger just started a custom spoke business in Poland called Szprycha ("spoke" in Polish). Check his Spoke Machine:

Sturdy local hardwoods and clever spoke resting places.

Catch bottle for spoke trimming debris.

Baltimore wheel building and mechanic legend, Jason Wright, offered a shot of his P&K Lie stand, installed last year. Hard to resist the eye candy.

Notice Jason's brass fixing screws. Solid but versatile mounting

.

Send any glimpses to me (ric@wheelfanatyk.com) and suggestions you can share about setup and navigating the market. I'll share all I can.
