What
Our latest 15 myrtlewood shufflers are crazy wild thanks to burl material from Edensaw in Port Townsend. No telling if shufflers will be this spectacular again, so it’s first come, first serve. Views of 4 of them are below. All are at this wild level!
When
It’s the Tenth Anniversary of the shuffler! First commercialized in 2014, they help builders worldwide to lace wheels easier and faster. While there are numerous copies, ours are still artisanal made in Montana by the legendary Jon Hjertberg.
About
Myrtlewood is a sustainable hardwood known for it’s workability and beauty. The tree is native to Northern California (there known as the California Bay Laurel) and Oregon (known as the Oregon Myrtle). Most commercial harvest occurs in western Oregon. Nor Cal sees them all around the Bay Area and elsewhere.
The tree begins as a bush with many thin trunks that fuse together as it grows, which can make crazy grain. When myrtle develop burls, the figuring can become especially elaborate. Myrtlewood shufflers cost more because the wood is more expensive and more difficult to work with.If you are a wheel building guru (or aspire to be), consider upgrading your kit!
