Majestic Speedwell

November 12, 2017

In 2011 I enjoyed building two wheels with vintage Prior hubs and wood rims. They were destined for a 1930's Australian Speedwell track bike undergoing restoration by Bobby Landry in Colorado. This week I saw the finished product and it's worth the wait!

Very similar machine to Dunc Gray's ridden to Australia's first cycling Gold at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Now Sydney's Velodrome is named for him and his medal winning bike is on display.

Check the period details!

Nothing quite like those Prior hubs.

Uniglide chain?

Why build wheels? You're bound to feel a bit immortal when your work becomes part of such a timeless icon as this Speedwell. Thanks, Bobby!

Wheel Fanatyk

Wheel Fanatyk is an opportunity to share about how bicycles and wheels work—what makes them last longer and ride better, and what tools help us build them finer and faster.
